Twitter, which just got into the advertising business last year, will start selling political ads this week. An example of a promoted political tweet, from Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign.

The ads will appear as Promoted Tweets, which come up under certain search terms or in the timeline of Twitter users who follow a political campaign. Campaigns can also pay to appear on the top of search trends or to appear as suggested accounts to follow. (Read more…)

Nielsen Study Reveals the Power of Social Media (Business2Community)

Nielsen recently released its “State of the Media: The Social Media Report”, which reveals the increasing popularity of social media and its rising influence among Internet users in the U.S. last Sunday.

Social media affects consumer behavior on such a high level, considering social networks and blogs dominate America’s time online. According to Nielsen’s study, social networks and blogs account for about 22.5 percent of time spent online, which is more than 9.8 percent of time spent for online games and 7.6 percent for e-mail. Major Redesign for Facebook Coming (Mashable)

Facebook plans to roll out a major redesign of user profiles at its f8 developer conference this week, Mashable has learned.

Details about the redesign are sparse, but two sources familiar with Facebook’s plans (who have asked to remain anonymous) have told us that the redesign is “major” and will make Facebook profiles nexuses for consuming content.
